LET THERE BE *Light*
Hi! Cassie here to talk about one of my favorite design elements. LIGHTING!
No matter how lovely a room is, the lighting can make or break it. Lighting is hands down my favorite thing to source. Light fixtures can be beautifully sculpted pieces of art (like the one pictured here from West Elm Kids), the perfect touches of whimsy, and the most important element in setting the mood.
How Playroom Lighting Affects Kids
We all know bright lights can energize you and lift your mood while softer, dim lights can relax and calm you down. Studies show that in winter, when it gets dark earlier, we actually experience higher levels of melatonin in our bodies. The opposite is true when it comes to the bright screens of computers, tablets, and phones that keep us wired when we are trying to wind down.
As much as light affects adults, it affects kids even more. Kids are so in tune with their surroundings. We always like make sure our clients have multiple lighting options in their playrooms that can adapt to their moods. The ability to switch off bright overhead lights and instead turn on softer lighting is a great tool parents can use when things are getting too wild or it’s time to settle down for the evening.
Lighting also a fun way to enhance the power of play! Twinkle fairy lights can be the magical touch in a cozy corner or fort, neon lights add the perfect vibe for a tween and teen room, and a spot light in a dramatic play corner can make your budding star feel like they are on Broadway!
